Hot Architecture

Traveling to Sorrento, Italy for the month long summer intensive painting program, I created a series of paintings that highlight the architecture and warmth of the Italian light as I experienced it. Implementing my own warm color palette of yellows, oranges, and purples I intensified the colors of the observed orange buildings that I saw. Simplifying the structure of the buildings into flat planes, I drew special attention to the balconies, shade awnings, umbrellas, and the negative shapes of the tops of buildings. Experimenting with differently colored skies, and imagined color; I came up with a distinctive style thickly painting layers of the architecture into planes of flat color.
