Soft- Scapes: Assemblages

These fabric works are part of an exhibition Soft-Scapes: Assemblages on view January 10-30, 2020 at The Harwood Art Center in Downtown Albuquerque, NM.

Soft-Scapes is an exhibition of new work by artist Molly Zimmer. These mural-size assemblages depict playfully abstracted environments or vibrant floral landscapes,  focusing primarily on the form of a curved line -- a ( or U shape -- as is found everywhere in nature: a rounded rock, an arch, a flower petal, or a ripple on water. Larger than life, these immersive soft sculptures encourage viewers to examine their personal connections with textiles and with nature.

Inviting a serious but exuberant approach to the process, Molly sews together pieces of felt, canvas, and other found fabrics to emulate the landscape. Engaging the tactile senses, she juxtaposes colors derived from nature such as gradients of skies, earth tones of soil, and the hot pinks, oranges, and greens of cacti. Detailed and slowly composed, these fabric constructions drape from the wall bringing playfulness and abstraction into the tradition of quilts, rugs, and other textile designs.

Molly’s massive colorful arrangements of fabric shapes extend from ceiling to floor, creating the sensation of stepping from a back porch into the garden beyond. As a threshold between one world and another, these abstract portals answer a human need for the comforts and protection of home.
